Key Information for Parents of 7th and 8th Graders

Parents of 7th and 8th graders: Now's the time to check the orientation handout for new parents or the 2016-17 Grade Events webpage for grade-specific events. You can find information there about Parent Night/potluck/travel class dinners; the first parent night/potluck is for Grade 7 and will be held on Monday, Sept. 26 in the cafeteria. Also hold the date for Open School Day--your chance to visit your child's classes and browse student clubs--on Oct. 9! Read on for more information on the parent nights/7th-8th grade travel class parties, volunteering as a travel class representative, and signing up for the Neighborhood Safety Patrol, a once-a-year requirement for all 7-8 parents.

At the full-grade potluck and parent night, parents hear from the school administration, counselors and term advisors with a focus on issues of specific concern to your grade. Parents are encouraged to submit questions in advance via their respective Executive Grade Reps; time for socializing follows.  Grade 7 & 8 parents will also meet their Travel Class Reps, who will coordinate the event and dinner contributions (reps will be identified at the start of the year after class assignments are made -- if you are interested in volunteering as a Travel Class Rep, please contact (for seventh-grade parents) or Anna Lehmann at for eighth-grade parents.

There is also a travel class family party for each Grade 7 & 8 Travel Class. The suggested day is Sunday, October 16 but the actual date will be set separately by each Travel Class Rep who will arrange a time and location (ideally off-campus) for a potluck-style get-together.  This allows students and their families to get to know each other better.

Looking ahead, you'll be asked to sign up for a shift as a Parent Safety Patrol for Grade 7 & 8 travel classes. The school relies on parents to help keep our children and our school neighborhood safe. The Parent Safety Patrol, in conjunction with Hunter Public Safety and the 19th Precinct, provides a safety net for our students during after-school hours when they are traveling home. Parents of 7th and 8th grade students to patrol the school neighborhood each day from 2:30-4 pm and on half days from 10:30 am-12 noon; two to three individuals will be assigned to patrol together. Grade 7 parents walk in the second semester; Grade 8 parents are responsible for first semester. Stay tuned for your assigned date. Contact your grade reps above for more information.
