College Meetings

HCHS families begin to get acquainted with the College admissions process in 10th grade. The process is outlined in detail in the College Counseling Handbook, available on the HCHS Website. These are the major group meetings involving parents:

NOVEMBER: Grade 10-11 College Night (Parents and Students): At this informative session in the late fall, families will hear about the college admissions process from college admissions officers and HCHS counselors and will receive materials about HCHS's college application policies and procedures.

JANUARY: Grade 11 Parent Night and Potluck: Grade 11's potluck in January is extremely important to attend, as it focuses on the curriculum for Senior Year, especially on the non-course alternatives available to 12-graders. These include the Hunter Scholars Program (HSP), which is an outside internship in a field of interest; Teaching Internships within HCHS; College Courses at Hunter College or Columbia; and Independent Study, arranged with an HCHS teacher. FEBRUARY: Grade 11 College Night ("Meet the Counselors"—Parents Only): At this evening meeting held in February of junior year, parents meet in groups with their child's HCHS counselor to begin discussing specifics of the college process. They will learn how to use Naviance, the program through which counselors and students make college application plans.

APRIL: Grade 11 College Fair (Parents and Students): On an afternoon in April, representatives from colleges from across the U.S., Canada and Europe come to HCHS, providing an excellent opportunity for students and parents to find out more about colleges of interest.

MAY: Grade 10-11 Parent Night ("Parent Panel"): A panel of Grade 12 parents share their wisdom gained from the college process.

MAY: PTA General Meeting (for Parents of all grades): The Counseling Department presents the college-admissions results for the Senior Class.
