HCCS Middle States Committees Seeking Parent Volunteers

HCCS is looking for parent volunteers to serve with HCHS faculty and administration on the four Middle States committees  described below.  The first three are continuations from last year; the last one, Mid-term Review, is new.

Diversity Committee – Seeking one parent.  This committee continues the work of thinking about ways to facilitate dialogue surrounding issues of diversity in our school. Specific tasks for this year may include:
  • professional development for faculty
  • mentoring program for students from under-represented groups
  • more thorough and consistent incorporation of diversity issues into 7th grade Official, 8th grade Advisory, and Big Sib handbook/curriculum
  • research into hiring strategies that could draw in a more diverse faculty
  • ways to collect and utilize data to better support students

Meeting dates/times are:   Friday from 10:34 to 11:14 or Friday from 11:54 to 12:34. Meetings will alternate between the two times; meetings will be scheduled at least a week in advance and will not necessarily meet weekly. The first meeting will be 11:54 on Friday October 18th.

Governance Committee – Seeking one parent, preferably grade 10-12.  This committee will have a more limited task this year than in the past. If they receive the go-ahead from the college, they will work on setting the parameters (membership, meeting times, specific tasks) of the Advisory Board that will serve as an official channel of communication between the faculty of the Campus Schools and the college.

Meeting dates/times are:  Tuesdays from 11:18 to 11:50.   Will meet once a month or less.

School Culture and Ethics Committee – Seeking one parent, preferably grade 7-9.   This committee will work on defining the parameters of a community program to be implemented largely in 2014-2015. Our current plans include creating Community Days focusing on core values, designing programs for the 9th and 10th grades around service and/or leadership, and establishing a tradition of a school-wide summer reading/experience.

Meeting dates/times are:  Weekly on Tuesdays from 11:54 to 12:30

Mid-term Review Committee – Seeking two parents; one grade 7-9, one grade 10-11.  New committee in 2013-14. Because HCCS is at the mid-point of the Middle States cycle, we are required to do a mini-version of the self evaluation we did in 2009. This committee will be tasked with reviewing the Middle States Standards of Accreditation and evaluating HCCS against those standards. The committee will do its work in October and early November.

Meeting dates/times are:

Tuesday, October 15 from 11:00-12:00
Monday, October 21 at 3:00
Monday, October 28 at 3:00
