March 12 Discussion: "Access and Excellence: Can They Co-Exist in Elite Schools?"

MOSAIC, the diversity subcommittee of the HCES and HCHS PTAs, invites you to a conversation on "Access and Excellence: Can they Co-exist in Elite Schools?" Monday, March 12, 6:30-7:30 PM, Auditorium. (refreshments available from 6:00-6:30)
Shamus Khan, author of Privilege: The Making of an Adolescent Elite at St. Paul's School, will lead a discussion with New York Public Library President Anthony Marx, who as past president of Amherst College spearheaded successful efforts to increase recruitment of students from low-income families. Marx had earlier worked on increasing access to high-achievement schools while on the political science faculty at Columbia and with a prep school for black students in post-apartheid South Africa. All members of the Hunter community are welcome.

When economic factors are introduced in school and college admissions:
  • Are standards and selectivity maintainable?
  • Does the whole school benefit?  Does society?
  • Do racial and ethnic imbalances get ignored?
Come join the discussion.  If you would like to submit questions to the speakers in advance, please email
