March 21 PTA Meeting (in Queens): Electronic Media and The 'Always On' Adolescent

On Wednesday, March 21, the PTA will hold its annual Queens meeting, at the Nan Shan Senior Center, 136-18 39th Ave., 6th Floor, Flushing. We will explore the effects of electronic media on the generation growing up today with Facebook, smartphones, Skype, videogames, or some other form of communication "always on." Less visible than the gadgets are the intimate communities of "friends" that develop around each of them. How do parents begin to understand this new world, let along monitor it? What are the consequences for our children in terms of their social development and the "end" of their privacy? Panelists include: Dr. Richard Gallagher of NYU Medical School and the NYU Child Study Center, Dr. Nicole Foubister, director of the Tisch Young Adult Inpatient Program at NYU Medical Center and Dr. Margarita Paredes, bilingual clinical director of LINCS “Latinos in Context” at the NYU Child Study Center.
